Classes I have mentored/taught Through Portland State University
Portland State offers undergrads and grad students the opportunity to mentor a variety of math classes. Mentoring a class entails taking copious lecture notes that showcase the lessons and instructor moves; grading homework, quizzes, and exams; teaching one or more full lessons; and holding office hours for tutoring.
I have mentored...
Math 70: Elementary Algebra - fractions to factoring polynomials
Math 105: Math for the Liberal Arts Major - voting theory, exponential growth, graph theory
Math 211: Math for Elementary Teachers - operations in base 5, set theory, and logic
Stats 243: Introduction to Statistics - probability, confidence intervals, binomial distribution, z-scores, and much, much more
Math 261: Linear Algebra - all things vectors and matrices
Portland State gives its GTAs the opportunity to dive right into the deep end and teach a class their very first quarter of grad school. It is/was a very rewarding experience that I recommend for anyone interested in teaching.
As a GTA I taught one class each term...
Fall 2011: Math 95: Intermediate Algebra - factoring polynomials to the quadratic function
Winter 2012: Math 70: Elementary Algebra - fractions to factoring polynomials
Spring 2012: Math 70: Elementary Algebra
Summer 2012: Math 212: Math for Elementary Teachers - focus on fractions, decimals, probability, and statistics
Spring 2013: Math 95: Intermediate Algebra - factoring polynomials to the quadratic function
Fall 2013: Math 95: Intermediate Algebra - factoring polynomials to the quadratic function
Winter 2014: Math 211: Math for Elementary Teachers - foundations of number theory, set theory, and logic
Winter 2014: Math 213: Math for Elementary Teachers - all things geometric
Spring 2014: Math 212: Math for Elementary Teachers - integers, rational numbers, real numbers, probability, and statistics
